Welcome to APEC MRM3
The Third Meeting of the APEC Ministers Responcible for Mining Meeting was held in Perth, Australia, on 14 February 2007. The Honourable Ian Macfarlane, Minister for Industry Tourism and Resources, on behalf of Ministers, signed off on the Ministerial Joint Statement.
Sustainable Development Workshops (November 2007)
Following the success of the sustainable development workshops held during MRM3 in Perth in February 2007, the Australian Government is conducting two more sustainable development workshops in China and Indonesia in November 2007. The workshops are being supported by AusAIDs Public Sector Linkages Program.
The objective of the workshops is to foster sustainable mining practices by providing technical and capacity-building support to APEC developing member economies.
APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining (MRM)
Resource endowment and minerals and metals usage varies considerably between APEC member economies; this makes the relationship among APEC economies and Ministers Responsible for Mining even more valuable. The Asia Pacific region is the main driver of global economic growth and a significant producer and user of minerals and metals. Many economies derive important economic and social benefits from their development, trade and use. The mining and metals industry can effectively be an engine for development. The meeting of Ministers Responsible for Mining provides Ministers with the opportunity to discuss the challenges arising for both producer and consumer economies from the increasing demand for minerals and metals globally, and the development of new technologies and applications which require new material. The MRM3 week provides a fantastic opportunity to give minerals and metals in APEC a new impetus and to discuss the challenges that face a key productive activity for the development of APEC economies and the world, at the highest level.
